Prep Notes for Stepping Out on Sunday, September 7, 2003
Isn't it nice that we get several new starts each year? We all know that January
1 is a time to make resolutions and starting over with a clean slate. Yet, I
also think for many of us, the end of summer, the beginning of the school year,
is also a chance to start anew. Let's take a look at a couple of new beginnings
this week in preparation for next week's sermon.
Monday, September 1
What time of day are you most creative? Do you get more done on your "day
off" or on "work time"? Read Genesis 1:1-2:3. Outline this passage
according to the repeated pattern you observe. In this symmetry, what repeated
words or phrases do you observe?
Tuesday, September 2
What does this pattern tell you about the order of creation? Its author? Its
purpose? Its climax? Its goodness? Its completeness?
Wednesday, September 3
According to Romans 1:20-25 and Hebrews 11:1-3, what should be our response
to God's self-revelation in the created order? What are the consequences for
refusing to praise the creator?
Thursday, September 4
What does John 1:1-3 add to your perception of Genesis 1:1-3 and 1:26? What
is Christ's role in creation? And how does Genesis help you appreciate the nature
and work of Christ?
Friday, September 5
Read John 12:20-36. What brings Gentiles to Jerusalem during this time of Jewish
patriotism? What was so unique about their request that Phillip would first
filter it through Andrew?
Saturday, September 6
In this parable (verse 24), who is the kernel of wheat? What is Jesus calling
the disciples to do in verses 25-26? Where is Jesus calling you to die so that
you might live and have a new beginning? What do you tend to hold on to rather
than follow Jesus?
