SCHOLARSHIPS
The Bel Air United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund came about by the generosity of Ben and Rachel Tobin around 1980. Rachel was a math teacher in Aberdeen and her husband, Ben, worked for Harford Mutual Insurance Company. These were loving people who truly valued education. In the years since then, members of our church family have added to the Tobin’s original gift of $10,000, and today there is over $11,000 in principal. The scholarship money comes from the interest on the principal and through the special offering for the BAUMC Scholarship Fund. This past year, we also earned some money from selling baseball tickets and from the Women’s Tea held in November. To date, we have given scholarships to 100 young people amounting to $45,680.
Members of the congregation serving on the Scholarship Committee this year were Sandy Conway, Joni Behrendt, Lou Sedlak, Sally Moen, Dr. Brad Undem, Nancy Undem, and Connie Schepers (Chair). The criteria used to determine the gifts are church involvement (which carries the most weight), academic achievement, and character. This year, we are giving four scholarships amounting to $4,000.
The recipients this year, as in years past, are very impressive young people. Just to give you an idea of some of the things they have been involved with here at church, I noted Confirmation, Confirmation Mentors, Cherub and Wesley Choirs, Youth Choir, Jubilee Ringers, Carillon Ringers, Sine Nomine Ringers, church musicals, Sunday School Assistants, VBS Teachers Assistant, Child Care team, Pancake Supper helper, Food Delivery helper, Adopt-A-Child, Hope Club participant, church Greeter, worked on Habitat for Humanity, packed boxes for college students, Pew Rack Ministry, packed lunches for the Homeless Shelter, and participated in four mission trips to Baltimore. They have held down part-time jobs throughout high school and still maintained academic excellence, being active in National Honor Society, Student Government, taking part in athletics, other school clubs, and community service.
Congratulations to our 2006 Scholarship Recipients!

GROWING THE SEMINARY SCHOLARSHIP FUND
by Janet Newberry, Lay Leader
Our church’s Mission Statement says: We, the congregation of Bel Air UMC, are called to make disciples of Jesus Christ, as we show all people the way to the Father; teach them to know the Son, Jesus Christ; and prepare them to grow in faith and ministry, empowered by the Holy Spirit. As a part of that vision, we are excited when members of our church hear the call to ordained ministry that will give them great opportunities to “show the way to the Son.” As with all graduate education, seminary programs are very costly. In order to support and assist our members who are in seminary, Bel Air UMC has established a Seminary Scholarship Fund. We have already been able to support one student, and now we have two members who will be in seminary. If you would like to support this fund, please make your check payable to Bel Air UMC and mark your check or envelope with “Seminary Scholarship Fund” and place it in the offering or mail it to the church. Won’t you pray about contributing to this fund?
The Journey to Ordination
The journey to ordination as an Elder in the United Methodist Church is a long and challenging one. When one of our members decides to step out in faith along this road, we are excited at the opportunity to be a part of this special faith journey. Cindy Caldwell, Director of Adult Discipleship at Bel Air UMC, has heard the call and has taken the first steps along the road. On March 27, 2006 , at a special Charge Conference, Cindy’s name was put forward and voted upon as a Candidate for Ordained Ministry.
Faith has been an important part of Cindy’s life from childhood, and she gave her life to Christ as a college student. Like many of us, Cindy drifted away from the church as the demands of marriage and beginning a family complicated her life and took much of her time. When she, her husband Mac, and her children moved to Bel Air, they began to attend BAUMC for the sake of the children. However, it is through attending BAUMC that Cindy understood the church as God’s family and developed a personal relationship with Christ. She resumed her faith walk and became an active member of the church, teaching Sunday School and becoming involved in youth ministry and outreach. In 1997, a Walk to Emmaus retreat allowed Cindy to see Christ not only as her Savior, but also as the Lord of her life. She began working part-time at the church as the Membership Coordinator and then moved on to her current position as full-time Director of Adult Discipleship. Through the years, Cindy’s call to ordained ministry has become louder and louder. Until recently, however, family responsibilities have prevented her from acting upon it. Now the timing is right, and she is ready to find the balance between answering the call and her responsibilities as wife and mother.
I have known Cindy for many years, since our sons were in Cherub Choir together. We have studied together in DISCIPLE Bible Study and have served together on various committees. Cindy’s husband, Mac, and their son, Jake, have had a profound impact on the lives of the Newberry family. The fruits of Cindy’s faith walk are evident all around us at BAUMC. Many, many people in the church have been touched by her deep faith and devotion to Christ. We at BAUMC have been privileged to call Cindy our friend, as we have watched her grow spiritually. She has touched our lives in many ways, and we can see clearly that God is calling her to ordained ministry. We wish Cindy well and hope that through the Seminary Scholarship Fund, we will be able to support her financially, as well as through our prayer and encouragement.
Sermon Series: Creating a “Christ Culture”
We will hear how Jesus and early Christians, as well as Old Testament leaders, confronted their worldly culture. We can then learn from them how to confront our own worldly culture – living in the Kingdom of God .

CHRISTIAN LEARNING THIS SUMMER
Farewell for the Summer
The last day of “regular” 2005-2006 Sunday School is Sunday, June 25. Be sure to say “Thank You” to your teachers!
FIESTA: Where Kids Are Fired Up About Jesus!
Our Vacation Bible School will be underway during the week of June 26-30. So watch out for all the sombrero-wearing kids finding out more about the spice of Christian life and quenching their thirst with Jesus’ Word. It will be a hot time at BAUMC!
“Something’s coming, something good…”
And it starts on Sunday, July 2 at 9:20 AM : A very special Summer Sunday School for children!
It’s called “Traits of a Faithful Disciple: The Sequel.” Using the discipleship traits that we learned as a congregation earlier this year, we’ll be revisiting these traits to help children understand the importance of living as a disciple of Jesus Christ. Children in Kindergarten through 5th Grade will attend the opening of worship with their family in the Sanctuary, and then move to Room 130 (directly below the Sanctuary) following the Children’s Message. Children will return to the Sanctuary during the last hymn.
Parents: Have you signed up to help in your child’s classroom this summer? The school-year teaching teams take a vacation, and your assistance is needed in order for classes to continue during July and August. Please contact Joni Behrendt if you can help for just one Sunday! This includes Ages 2-4 and Kindergarten-Grade 5 at 9:20 AM and Ages 3-Grade 2 at 11:00 AM .
Mark your calendar for “Wild and Wonderful Wednesday Family Nights” on August 2, 9, 16, and 23 from 6:30-8:00 PM . Look for more information coming soon!
TINY TOTS SCHOOL NEWS
from Joan Elloff, Director
The Tiny Tots 3’s ended their year with a trip to Plumpton Park Zoo. Graduation days were held on May 4 and 5, with a total of 63 children being promoted to the 4 year old program. Our pre-K (4 year old) graduation was held on May 12, with 85 graduates. This was a very successful school year, and we would like to thank all of our parent volunteers for their help. We still have a few openings available for the 2006-2007 school year. For more information, contact Tiny Tots School at 410-838-6399.
LISA WONG WOLF WELCOMED TO CHURCH STAFF!
It is with great joy that we welcome Lisa Wong Wolf to our staff as our new Membership and Data Base Coordinator. Lisa serves as the administrator and main operator of our membership data base, and has already made significant progress in optimizing this system for the greatest possible care of our congregation. She will also facilitate the process of welcoming visitors to our church, helping them connect and guiding them through the membership process. Lisa works in the Church Office on Monday through Thursday, 9:00 AM-2:00 PM . On Sundays, she attends St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Bel Air with her husband, Michael, and her daughter, Kimberly.
Lisa has written her story below…
On July 5, 1963 , I was born in New York City to Sai-Loo and Donald Wong. I had one brother, Douglas, who is 3 years older. My mother was a homemaker and my father was a pioneer in the Ophthalmic Photographic Society. He was manager and retinal angiographer for Cabrini Medical Center in New York City for many years.
I attended Fashion Institute of Technology in 1981 and then Queens College in 1983. I majored in Computer Science and started work with an insurance agency in 1985 as the Computer Coordinator and Manager. I also did some per diem work as a retinal angiographer and helped my father teach ophthalmic photography.
I married a wonderful man, Michael B. Wolf, Jr., in October 1992 and gave birth to a perfect little girl, Kimberly Danielle Wolf, in 1996. For our daughter’s sake, my husband and I decided to move out of New York . Doing a neighborhood search on the computer, it led us to Bel Air, Maryland . Because of the quality of the education system and the peace and quiet, we moved to Bel Air in June 2005. My husband, Michael, is now training to become a firefighter and volunteers for the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company.

► Joe Boone was recently honored and recognized for his involvement with Camp Fairlee Manor. This camp for children and adults with severe disabilities is located near Chestertown on the Eastern Shore . Joe has been involved with Camp Fairlee Manor for 50 years, and his passion for that ministry spilled over into our church’s Volunteers In Mission (VIM) group. For 20 years, Joe has been inviting the VIM Team to join him for a working weekend. On our most recent visit, we honored Joe with a donation. The following letter was received from Sandy Tuttle, Director and CEO of the Easter Seals which Camp Fairlee Manor is involved with. She says:
On behalf of the Easter Seals and Camp Fairlee Manor, I would like to thank Bel Air United Methodist Church
and the VIM Team for your recent contribution to our camp in honor of Joe Boone. Your generous gift of $1,000
will help enable children and adults with disabilities to take part in an experience of a lifetime -- a week of fun
and adventure at Camp Fairlee Manor.
We are very appreciative for the many years that the VIM Team has provided volunteer services at Camp
Fairlee Manor. The particular honoring of Joe Boone and his key role in making this happen will be recognized
by placing the plaque in honor of him in a prominent place at the camp.
In loving thanks to Joe Boone for inviting Bel Air United Methodist Church
Volunteers In Mission to make a difference in children’s lives at Camp Fairlee Manor.
► The Russia Initiative Program was established by the General Board of Global Ministries after the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991. As a result of the new freedom, The United Methodist Church started a program to support and develop small congregations throughout Russia . Bel Air UMC became a part of that program and in 1996 adopted God’s Field UMC in southern Moscow . Members of our Russian Outreach Committee have visited there four times in the past 7 years. We are now planning our fifth trip to Moscow in the Spring of 2007. Plans include visiting with the congregation of God’s Field and worshiping with two other congregations in the South Moscow District. The program and building arrangements of these churches will give us ideas for much needed worship space for God’s Field. We also want to visit an orphanage in the area and take gifts for the children. Our visit will be combined with enjoying the city of Moscow and touring the Golden Circle , some of the centuries old small towns surrounding the city. For questions regarding this trip, and for more information about the Russian Outreach Committee, contact Carol McCormack at 410-734-7476.
► Want to find out more about Bel Air United Methodist Church ? Come to the next Discovery Class Luncheon on Sunday, July 16 from 12:30-2:00 PM . STEPHEN SERIES SYSTEM OF LAY CARING MINISTRY
Our congregation has recently enrolled in the Stephen Series system of lay caring ministry, developed by Stephen Ministries , a nonprofit religious and educational organization based in St. Louis , Missouri . We will be developing a lasting program of caring ministry through the Stephen Series system of training and organization. This model of ministry is already working in thousands of congregations throughout North America and is equipping lay people to minister to others who are in need.
During the week of June 12, Rev. Peggy Groseclose and Connie McNey attended the Stephen Series Leader’s Training Course in Orlando , Florida . Next, lay people of our congregation will receive 50 hours of training in Christian caring skills. Upon completion of Stephen Series training, these lay caregivers will be commissioned as “Stephen Ministers” and will become an important part of our Congregational Care ministry. Stephen Ministers will provide confidential, one-to-one Christian care for people experiencing challenges in their lives such as hospitalization, loss of a loved one, loneliness, divorce, unemployment, birth of a child, and many other life events for which a person could benefit from an effective and helping and caring ministry.
This will be an exciting time for our church family. The Stephen Series both multiplies the amount of caring ministry that goes on in our congregation and deepens the level of participation by lay people in the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. If you have questions about this, please contact Rev. Peggy Groseclose. In the meantime, please keep our congregation in your thoughts and prayers as we prepare for this step forward in lay caring ministry.
THANK YOU!
Dear Bel Air United Methodist Church ,
Thank you so much for your generosity in contributing to my support. I am blessed to have a church that is willing to help send people out to share the good news of Jesus Christ. I can’t wait to be able to share my experience with everybody when I return. Thank you for the prayers for this ministry I am involved with and for my time down here. Have a great and blessed summer.
Love in Christ,
Erica Miller ( Myrtle Beach , SC )

Gratefully,
Lois R. Jones
My sincerest thanks and best wishes to all for your prayers, cards, and visits during my illness. You kept my spirits high and my surgery and recuperation a success.
